Across a large sufficient sample, the correlation between consistent data and impressions is difficult to dismiss.

How to Prioritise the Clean-Up

Getting this right buys a higher conversion rate without touching the website at all, once the obvious errors are gone. For the most part, give one person the logins and one document the truth; ambiguity is what causes drift, give or take a reporting cycle. Twenty verified profiles outperform two hundred abandoned ones, every time.

At the same time, nAP records are less a marketing channel than a data layer under one. Clean records are one of the few local levers that still work without a budget – and it rarely happens quickly. For the most part, record the canonical version of the name, address and phone number somewhere whoever updates the website can find it.

Easier discovery tends to follow within within a few weeks of a serious clean-up. The order matters: cross-check first, then update, and only then submit anywhere new, at least in a competitive market.

Three Fields That Decide the Outcome

  • Day one Merely as important, anything unverifiable should be removed rather than corrected.
  • Week 2 Handle the high-authority sources by hand and batch the long tail afterwards.
  • Month 2 Keep a change log; six months on, nobody remembers which field was edited or why.
  • Week 1 Set aside time to claim each quarter rather than treating it as a one-off project.

Five Checks Before You Submit

  • Prefer removing a wrong listing to leaving it half-corrected.
  • Resist the urge to vary the business name for keywords; consistency beats cleverness here, even when nothing else changes.
  • Keep the description factual; the categories carry the relevance work.
  • Photograph or screenshot each profile before editing – reversions do happen.
  • In practice, treat the accessibility details as a single source of truth, not as a field to be improvised per site, regardless of sector.
  • Check what a competitor in a competitive suburb has claimed before deciding where to submit.

Begin With the Records You Already Have

Unlike content, citations do not need to be original – they need to be identical. Owners frequently catch listing completeness moving before they catch the ranking change itself. By contrast, business listings form the connective tissue between a website and the wider local web, and the same holds at scale.

Crucially, volume flatters a report; agreement is what actually moves direction requests. Taken together, strip away the jargon and business directories are merely repeated, checkable facts. Check by phone or postcode lookup, not by memory.
